I am thinking about my presentation for the residential.  It feels like it will end up involving identity, how we present ourselves.  I have not really done very much like this for a while, none of us have, so I am expecting us all to be a little bit nervous.  As I write this I am listening too the ERA conference in the background and wondering how my life has got ensnared by academic discourse.  In some ways there wasn't anywhere else for me to go but there is something about the focus on language as a mode of representation that will never sit easily with me.

I decided that to introduce something about Collage as I found this poster that I made in Venice and it reminded me that collage is really cool when working with people who may or may not feel comfortable with other forms of expressive making. 


I started to think about what isn't held within the notion of collage that isn't present within the concept of agencement or assemblage. One issue is the potential suggestion that a collage at some point is finished- it can be published and presented as a complete work.  But in process as a thing that is consistently emerging Collage has a lot of things going for it.  to extend on my David Shrigly derived poster collage as both activity and metaphor can help us.  Collage may hold assemblage- actor network theory - Event theory - a Little object orientated ontology and all sorts of stuff we have done and I have done about the material of the world.  Basically a collage can expand its edges to include all possible realtions and these relations emerge through the process of coming into relation. 


1. Not start off with a blank sheet of paper

2. Not rely on a specific skills set or the learning of a technique.

3. Not bind us to a specific art history or art contained arena. We could talk of collage in art but it comes and goes and is inconsistent.  It often is seen as a way the real came into painting like Picasso using a bus ticket stuck into his cubist composition. 

4. Collage can bring many different aspects of things into relation and this is what the tree project is doing and where our/my research is going.

So question for the event and for you on here is if we are making a collage within treescape what are we bring together. What materilas are we using and what is our ground, the surface we are assembling things on, what glues and adesives are we using and what dimension are we making a collage within.  I hope I will be able to cut and paste and stick these ideas into my presentation on Friday.

    I like the idea of collage but I also think film as collage is an interesting idea. We missed you.

    I enjoyed watching the tree movies - it somehow feels good to have them all - these are the many starting points.  Everything felt quite safe in a good way apart from Johan's talk that suggested the future didn't exist so science could not have it. We pull the future back to us and invent it but only in the future we also invent the past of a childhood which never existed to propel us forward.  It feels that although trees may have more going on about them than we previously thought they probably don't do this. The thing I felt as I watched the talks unfold was something about where we humans sit within all this, the thoughts that jarred and flowed and connected.  I will bullet point a couple for discussion later. 1.  The most exciting conversation we had on Trees was the data analysis discussion we had with Johan, Samyia, Peter and you. In my notes we started with the idea of snippets and what was there and what wasn't there and zooming out and zooming in.  I hadn't done my homework but I did a behind the scenes search. First I watched the videos - the hurried sounds, the tree stamping, the worms, the behind the scenes repetitions and murmurings of school.  I was interested in the zooming in and out and what we see through these images.  Peter talked of resisting the hermeneutical stance and responding but not interpreting. This is an image of bark - it is quite arty and would probably go down well at a conference but it was just taken but not intentionally.  I like the way this reminds me of a ship, the one we took to the Orkneys, in which we sailed for 6 hours from Aberdeen. Before we sailed we went to see the Wee Forest and it had grown.  I like the way the wire net...

Into the Woods

  I have been working with Abi in Clifton Park over the summer we have done 5 sessions now.  Part of me isn't sure what we are supposed to be doing but to be honest I have decided that this is when we do our best work. I'm not that sure why I decided to do traditionally arty stuff for these workshops but that is how it worked out.  There is something about doing a trees project and drawing with charcoal on paper that seems to make sense - all the materilas are made of trees. I've also done some sculptural stuff with clay and Plaster of Paris. Its as though i need to find an artists identity in these materials though i am out of touch with them and have never had a good eye or hand for drawing.  The idea for Tuesday was to try and model drawing and looking and see if the Children would join in on some level - I didn't like my drawing and although the children did join in. they did it on their own terms.
