I haven't read any Peter Kraftle yet but he sounds really interesting.  I have done my first full week since getting Covid.  I still feel a bit warn out but it is certainly at the edges now.  I enjoyed interacting with the trees project and doing the little bit of writing on Odd.  This is my week

 

Monday.  Reading for my Phd writing a blog post - catching up with emails about a projection I'm doing when a giant Puppet comes to Sheffield from Syria. Blogged for PhD.  We had a big discussion about film and ethics and what was possible

Tuesday.  Shooting a film with Simon Armatage in the Peaks.  Editing and liaising with off the shelf .

Wed .  Lots of tree meeting felt good at the end of the day like I had loads of experience.  Great to see Johan again. wrote 100 words of Phd on mending the Zip wire.

Thursday.  Had a great meeting with Jennifer - went on a trip to the Addy an adventure playground in Nottingly - was an attempt to see people for work

Friday - Took dog to have his balls off edited a film and wrote 1000 words of Phd - I did not read what I had read before.  started reading my Blog from the start - sent some films to simon and now it 3 oclock i will finsish this then go pick the dog up in his cone of shame. 

I have thought about trees a lot this week but I think I need to start reading some things to come up to speed.  My overall thought from the week is we will need some things to act as as what Lacan calls point de capiton .  He describes the quilting point as holding the different layers close together but not making a single thing.  At the moment we know we will need some of these ties but we are not sure what they are or what we will be pulling together.  My feeling is that we should actually have something that we intend to make which is new.  In a small way simon making his short film is doing this - we will have people speaking and images - i sent him an image of my platform because i thought it would fit.  The film will pull these things into a place for a while as will the discurive labs or whatever we call them .  I suppose the thing to think about is how big is the quilt and how tightly does it need to be held together

    I follow Little Amal on Instagram- is that your projection - can I come and stop over.
    The project is cohering quite well with the discussions. Your thesis can fit in nicely. Keep coming back to the platform and the assemblage and you will be fine.

      yes puppet comes on the 29th October arrives at the canel and ends up in peace gardens where I'm projecting - come and stop - simona armetage on the Sunday _ shall I try and get you a ticket ?

    I enjoyed watching the tree movies - it somehow feels good to have them all - these are the many starting points.  Everything felt quite safe in a good way apart from Johan's talk that suggested the future didn't exist so science could not have it. We pull the future back to us and invent it but only in the future we also invent the past of a childhood which never existed to propel us forward.  It feels that although trees may have more going on about them than we previously thought they probably don't do this. The thing I felt as I watched the talks unfold was something about where we humans sit within all this, the thoughts that jarred and flowed and connected.  I will bullet point a couple for discussion later. 1. The struggle between individual and collective responsibility for the coming storm. 2. The individual nature of experience - we notice the impact of climate change but we notice through how it is represented as a global thing not locally.  ...

 The most exciting conversation we had on Trees was the data analysis discussion we had with Johan, Samyia, Peter and you. In my notes we started with the idea of snippets and what was there and what wasn't there and zooming out and zooming in.  I hadn't done my homework but I did a behind the scenes search. First I watched the videos - the hurried sounds, the tree stamping, the worms, the behind the scenes repetitions and murmurings of school.  I was interested in the zooming in and out and what we see through these images.  Peter talked of resisting the hermeneutical stance and responding but not interpreting. This is an image of bark - it is quite arty and would probably go down well at a conference but it was just taken but not intentionally.  I like the way this reminds me of a ship, the one we took to the Orkneys, in which we sailed for 6 hours from Aberdeen. Before we sailed we went to see the Wee Forest and it had grown.  I like the way the wire net...

Into the Woods

  I have been working with Abi in Clifton Park over the summer we have done 5 sessions now.  Part of me isn't sure what we are supposed to be doing but to be honest I have decided that this is when we do our best work. I'm not that sure why I decided to do traditionally arty stuff for these workshops but that is how it worked out.  There is something about doing a trees project and drawing with charcoal on paper that seems to make sense - all the materilas are made of trees. I've also done some sculptural stuff with clay and Plaster of Paris. Its as though i need to find an artists identity in these materials though i am out of touch with them and have never had a good eye or hand for drawing.  The idea for Tuesday was to try and model drawing and looking and see if the Children would join in on some level - I didn't like my drawing and although the children did join in. they did it on their own terms.
